Welcome
Haaf Net Fishery English Solway Firth
The English Haaf Net fishery has been in existence for over 1000 years and is probably one of the oldest net fisheries in Britain. It is rightly described as a world-class heritage fishery and a unique example of living archaeology.
The equipment and techniques have changed very little since it was introduced by Norse-Irish settlers bout 900AD. Grandfathers, fathers and sons have passed down knowledge and techniques over successive generations.
All this is all about to end as this unique fishery is being strangled out of existence by a combination of zealous regulators and a band of ruthless private commercial rod fishery businesses further up the river.
A succession of oppressive byelaws and legislation has made it almost impossible to fish.
Haaf Netting is part of the fabric and culture of the peoples of the Solway Firth.
This is a public fishery, which belongs to everyone.
The right to catch a salmon in these waters is ancient and it is the Haaf netters that should be protected.
